Environmental Justice plank
Amendment to Environmental Platform (Est. 2017)
Environmental Justice must be addressed in siting, discharge and permitting processes as well as in the disposal of materials
.
Studies show that Communities with low socio-economic scores and minority communities are disproportionately impacted by pollution. Due to their low level of political and economic influence, these same communities are the most likely locations for the siting or allowing of “toxic outliers”-- facilities that emit extraordinary amounts of harmful pollutants and which present the greatest health risks to children.
Whether these at-risk communities are in struggling rural areas or larger urban areas, the people living near pollution sources suffer additional health problems, including increased rates of cancer. That is unfair and unacceptable.
